How’d I forget to do this?

Cycling: Last year pedaled the bike right around 1,750 miles. I’m not sure of the exact mileage – I checked the other day in preparation for this entry but forgot the total.

And it doesn’t matter. The goal was 3000 miles and I fell far short regardless of what it was.

The prior year I cranked out 2460 miles and I figured 3000 would be easy enough to hit this year. A late winter – we had 20 inches of snow in March – followed by an early winter — snow started falling in October (just a little, but it was a sign of the cold and dreariness to come) – sort of held me back. (That’s my excuse. A real man, I know, could have pedaled 1000 miles in June, July and August and had nine months to screw off.)

Reading: I read 31 books. That’s down from 33 in 2007 and 58 in 2006.

My Typical Saturday Night: Looked like this…

Well, that may not be typical. I have two crock pots so sometimes I’m eating out of a yellow bowl.

Goals for 2009

Cycling: 3000 miles

Reading: 35 books.

3000 miles? Wow. I’ve only got an odometer on one of my bikes and I only installed it about halfway through last summer but I don’t think I logged even 200 miles last year.

You’ve given me something to aspire to this year, Delmer. I think I’ll start tomorrow morning.

  2. Ginger says:

You’ve shifted from Guinness to Jack Daniels in ’09? I mean…not that I’m judging you or anything… ;)

  3. elise says:

I thought that you were drinking A1 Steak Sauce! I guess your Cabergoline doesn’t make you more sensitive to alcohol, I know when I was on Parlodel that I was pretty easy to get drunk.

  4. Jeff says:

I don’t believe I even DRIVE 3000 miles in a year, Delmer, let alone go that far on a bike. That’s what makes you such an awesome guy. And 35 books? I may keep up with you there, but there are guys who won’t read 35 WORDS in a year, unless box scores count. See uou, dude.

  5. I started out last year tracking my mileage on my elliptical, but then when we moved back, I slacked off (it shows!). I’ve started tracking it again, but I haven’t gone very far. I’ve never tracked the number of books I’ve read. That’s a good idea!

    Hahaha
You’re getting a lot of mileage out of the chair, though.
    :)

Delmer – I had to leave a comment. My name is Natalie. I started reading your blog through a friend- Greeneyezz. ZZ said to say hi and encouraged me to send a comment. I found your blog on her website and enjoyed it quite a bit :) I soon ended up reading some of your previous posts and your sense of humor just cracks me up. The everyday stuff we all go through – you write in a way that makes me feel like I could be having a conversation with you – not just reading a post :) I mean that as a high compliment. ZZ has encouraged me to start a blog but I haven’t yet. I often post on Syracuse.com – under YadaYadaYada :) I started doing that a year and half ago as a means of escape. My dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer and it really sent me into a tailspin. I found some comfort on that board and…. here I am. My dad passed away a few months ago. I guess it’s my way of expressing myself – posting on that forum. Anyways…

Love Your blog! Thanks for sharing your humor – And as far as this post is concerned- I love that you keep track of how many books you read – I thought I was the only one doing that :) I see that you’re drinking Jack Daniels :) Not my style.. I’m more of a Killian’s Irish Red kind of girl :)

Come on now–you also have the black crockpot. Can you remember what that hard stuff will do to you brain cells? Hugs

  9. Kristine says:

Well, me I’m aiming for a more sustainable lifestyle (not so much as in “eco-friendly” but in “Kristine-friendly”) in 2009. I might throw 3000 miles of cycling into that goal, but it would be at the gym doing cycling classes (due to knee-injuries) and also I have to look into how sustainably that would be first – I do have a strong tendency to overdo the things I love (I do love working out and being out and about, but slightly negelected this due to too many deadlines and too musch stress in 2008). One of these days I might even get around to writing about that new year’s resolution. Maybe.

I know I’m a tad late for the start of 2009, but we’re only a week into the the year of the ox (Chineese new year). Strictly speaking, of course, an ox is a castrated bull, and that – the year of the castrated bull – is one thing I’ve half-promised myself to blog about today. Let’s see how it goes, still a few hours left of the day on my side of the pond:-)

Either your head has gotten bigger or JD’s bottles are getting smaller…

  11. PocketCT says:

if you are switching up I recommend Jamesons – so you can stay in the same Irish theme.

  12. delmer says:

Iron Fist: Tomorrow is always a good time to start.

Ginger: I had the Jack at hand. I’m rather flexible with respect to bottled beverages.

Elise: A1 would be a nice change, I think. I think the thing that makes me most sensitive to alcohol is my drinking infrequency.

Jeff: One of the first four I read this year mentions one of my favorite characters … me

Geeky: I used Goodreads.com for the book tracking. It makes the math simple.

Sybil: I’ve probably racked up five or six thousand miles on the recliner last year.

Natalie: Thank you for the kind words. I’m sorry about your father; I started this, partially, as a way of performing some self-therapy. As for the books and things like that … if we don’t keep track, how will we know when we’ve read them all? :)

Granny: I donated the black crock pot to Goodwill (with some other things). I had trouble justifying owning three when there are so many men out there with zero.

Kristine: Three-thousand miles where you live would be a greater challenge … I think; I can’t believe it’s as flat there as it is here. I have it pretty easy. (I’m a bit late to the resolutions as well.)

Darrell: I hope the head isn’t getting any better. I already have trouble enough getting hats.

PockeCT: I’ll put Jamisons on my Christmas list — the JD was a gift a couple of years ago.

    Thanks for responding!

  14. Icy Mt. says:

You’re so huge that fifth of Jack looks tiny in your hand.

  15. Sue says:

For some reason you were not in my Google Reader anymore… no wonder I thought you hadn’t updated in forever! I have noticed several of my favorite blogs disappear that way… hrm.

Great last photo, it tells quite a story all it’s own.

  16. Mimi says:

Nice legs. Must be from all that biking.

  17. Becky says:

My legs hurt thinking about all that biking. But, I do love the Saturday nights…both the now and the future ones:)

  18. Mik says:

Crap, I’m worn out just reading how many miles you cycled, which reminds me 2009 is the year I am meant to get back in shape.
