We’re on new hardware folks.
What did we learn from the exercise? Mostly that I have 60 e-mail addresses that all forward to my primary e-mail address. The only reason this is worth noting is I had to type them all in by hand. (I typically set one up each time a company asks for one; this way I can track spam that comes my way.)
Anyway, I reinstalled the operating system from the ground up. This may have taken ten minutes and it was one of those deals where I boot off a CD, answer a question or two, walk away, and then answer several questions at the end. (I may be making this sound easier than it was. One of the questions was “What is Pi to the 111th digit” and I only had 10 seconds to type it in. As Linux distributions go this one is a real bitch — I’m using LeonaHelmsley release 8.2 (based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux).)
(Oh wait, let’s do a test here of the RSS feeds. There will be more to this post. Sweet! My reader was refreshed with this entry.)
After the install I pulled up the management console from the old box and applied those settings (most of them the first time and without error) to the new box.
There were some bumps.
At one point I had trouble making a secure shell connection to the new box. I thought it might have been related to having network cables crossed (would you have rather I said, “WAN and LAN cards confused?”). As it was I’d powered the computer down and few Linux distributions are so good they work when there’s no electricity going to the PC.
I’d put the new computer in place without creating the MySQL database I needed and didn’t notice until I’d made some configuration changes I needed to unmake. (I was copying settings from one box to another and when I noticed the mistake had two boxes with the same IP address.)
I’d done an export of my blog entries so I could simply import them into the new blog. Following the import I noticed I only had entries through May of 2007. I did another import/export and had the same thing happen. I finally did a dump of the original MySQL database and imported it.
When all was said and done everything seemed to work.
So far.
RSS appears to be fine, Delmer.
Congratulations.
My RSS didn’t update, but I deleted and reinstalled because I’m a loyal minion.
Your RSS came through just fine! Woot!
But…60 e-mail addresses?!?!? Why in the name of Bill Gates does anybody need 60 e-mail addresses?
Uh, your timestamp is 3 hours off.
60 emails? Are you nucking futs? I got this in Google Reader, by the way. Everything else is right over my head though…
60-In-One??? that sounds more like one of those memory card readers, not email forwarding,
Thomsa: Thanks for the verification … and the idea from earlier.
MikeO: Loyalty is always rewarded with more workplace storage.
Ginger: I’ll take a look at the timestamp issue.
Sue: I am a little futty.
Marty: Ah … the things we do to monitor spam. (What I’ve learned is that most people who say they’ll keep your e-mail private, do so. Of course I mainly frequent Snapfish, Flickr, CDW, etc.)
